How It Started

In 2014, Mattijs drove to Wiesbaden to visit his brother. It should have been a straightforward trip. Instead, he discovered he needed a German environmental sticker just to drive into the city.
What followed was hours of confusion—searching websites, figuring out the rules, and trying to understand where to buy the right sticker.

Frustrated by the experience, he thought: there has to be an easier way.

So he built one.

Together with Freek Jurg, he launched Duitsemilieusticker.nl—one of the first websites in the Netherlands to sell German Umweltplakette stickers. In the early days, they packed every single order themselves. Thousands of envelopes per week. By hand.

That first project eventually grew into more than 30 platforms helping travellers all across Europe.

Mattijs’ first drive through the Czech Republic also happened in 2014—and it didn’t go smoothly. He didn’t realise a vignette was required and was quickly issued a fine.

That one stung.

But it’s also the reason we spend so much time building our guides, writing simple and clear explanations, and making sure drivers have all the information they need before they set off.

Expertise & Specialist Areas

Mattijs has been building his knowledge of European tolling systems since 2014. He’s seen the systems evolve first-hand. It’s safe to say that, over a decade later, he knows them inside out. His areas of expertise include:

  • German Umweltplakette
  • French Crit’Air stickers
  • Czech e-vignette system
  • Austrian digital vignette
  • Danish tolling regulations
  • Eastern European tolling systems

30,000+ Kilometres on the Road

Mattijs doesn’t just write about Europe’s toll roads—he drives them.
He has driven through every country in Europe, most of them multiple times. In 2025 alone, he drove through Austria (twice), the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, and France.

His most recent test trip included the Prague ring road and the D7 motorway.
Mattijs often travels in his motorhome or car with his family. Wild camping is a regular thing for the Wijnmalens, as are winter ski trips. After all those kilometres covered, we had to ask about his favourite country to travel through, and France came out on top.

" I got into this business because I got fined. It really put a dampener on an otherwise amazing trip. Now my goal is to make sure our customers never have that same experience. "
